Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry
Identifies volatile and semi-volatile compounds in complex mixtures from their retention times and distinct mass spectra.

GC-MS combines gas chromatography with mass spectrometry to identify and analyse volatile and semi-volatile compounds within complex mixtures.
It provides highly accurate compound identification using retention time and mass spectral data.
How it works
Separation (GC)
Compounds are separated in a capillary column based on volatility and interaction with the stationary phase.
Ionisation & analysis
Separated molecules are ionised, accelerated and analysed by the mass spectrometer.
Detection
Electron ionisation (EI) and chemical ionisation (CI) are used for accurate compound identification.
Each compound elutes at a unique retention time and produces a distinct mass spectrum, allowing precise identification of components in complex samples.
